2002 UN Security Council passes Resolution 1441 warning "serious consequences" for Iraq's failure to disarm. The United States The UK and some minor countries take this and other resolutions that call for Iraq to verify its disarmament imply hostilities could be renewed without express approval from the Security Council after such a resolution fails to get support of the other permanent members. However the resolutions contain a clause that the security council be updated on the matter implying the opposite.
