Alabama became the first state in modern times to choose a slate of unpledged electors.

1876 Rutherford B. Hayes loses the popular vote nationwide to Governor Samuel J. Tilden but there is alleged corruption at the polls in four southern states including Florida which declared Tilden to have won the  popular vote and electors from those states . These states select another slate of electors which are pledged to Hayes. Congress has to work out which votes are valid. It's unclear why those states did not allow the more recent slate of electors to supersede the one chosen on election day.
