1863 Secretary of War Stanton give Massachusetts Governor Andrews permission to raise what became the 54th Infantry which was probably the most famous all black enlisted regiments in the war no black, however could be a commissioned officer. 1948 President Truman  desegregates  armed forces. with Executive Order 9981 this is one the few areas a president has the power to act unilaterally in. 1950 India gains independence from Britain and becomes republic.

1915 German progress up the Eastern slope of Hill 132 near Soissons and according to the French use poison against allies. Russians capture several villages in Rosog East Prussia ( Modern-Day Northwestern Poland).

8 Jan War and Peace

1815 American forces under Andrew Jackson defeat British under Sir Edward Packingham killing 1200 including Packingham. only 13 Americans died in the "Needless Battle" so called because King and Parliament had approved a peace treaty which was still in transit over the Atlantic so no one in North America knew. 1915 Germans lose hill 132 north of Soissons ,and Perthes (Champagne) but retake Burnhaupt Le Haut.
