He then won in 1970 after running a more professional campaign for governor. As Governor he worked for civil rights, to modernize his state’s education a mental health systems and cut spending In 1974 he started his run for the nomination of the Democratic Party for President. Winning the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary in 1976 gave him great numbers of delegates quickly. He traveled over 50,000 miles, visited 37 states and gave over 200 speeches before the entry of an opposing candidate Winning the nomination he went on to win a hotly contested general election against Gerald Ford. Sworn in 20 January 1977 he worked to combat climate change and established peace between Egypt 🇪🇬 and Israel 🇮🇱. Domestic problems such as fuel shortages and his handling of the taking of 53 hostages in the United States Embassy in Tehran by the Islamic Revolution in Iran 🇮🇷 who were only freed after he left office Before Ronald Reagan defeated him in 1980 Carter was able to defeat a challenge from Senator Edward M. Kennedy for the Democratic nomination. After leaving office he created the Carter Center and started working with Habitat For Humanity.
