1847 Winfield Scott's army marches into Mexico City. In a desperate attempt to free the city Santa Anna empties jails and tries to make an army of prisoners and indigents.

13 September Hangings

1847 United States Army hangs 30 deserters who were members  of the largely Irish immigrant mostly Catholic San Patricio Battalion who had defected to Mexico after war had broken out. Even though the Articles of war  said they should have been shot by a firing squad. According the order  the hanging happened when the American flag was raised over the castile which happened at 9:30 that morning. Fifteen who had deserted before the congress had declared war were given 50 lashes on their bare backs, branded with a letter D for desertion, forced to wear iron collars for the rest of the war and  dishonorably discharged. Mexico considered these men to beyond court-martial as prisoners of war we considered them deserters.
