1967 After a battle which began in 1958 when they decided to marry and live in Virginia against the state's Anti Interracial marriage  law Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter (Loving) convince the United States Supreme Court the law is a violation of equal protection. Originally they got a one year sentence suspended on condition they not return to the state for 25 years and they lived in Washington D.C. for 5 years. When one of their kids was hit by a car Mildred wrote to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy who told her to go to the A.C.L.U. which attempted to get the trial court  to dismiss the conviction this failed and they appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court which upheld the trial court and then they appealed to The United States Supreme Court.
